Breaking the Chains

Breaking the Chains was a series of arts events in Autumn 2014 on the theme of modern slavery and human trafficking. An exhibition in Tower Gallery, in partnership with Rosetta Art Centre, from 16 October - 6 November was packed with powerful work in a variety of media from a wide range of artists, including two site-specific installations.

The opening event was a performance of the shocking one-woman play Asena, followed by a discussion of the issues it raised chaired by journalist Juliet Spare and including representatives of Stop the Traffik an local charity Alternatives Trust East London.

On 6 November the finale featured live music from soloist Chen Wang and musicians, and a short but stunning dance piece called Frontline by EIC Dance Theatre. The four dancers told the stories of women they had worked with in Brazil who were vulnerable to exploitation but found hope and a more positive attitude to themselves and their bodies.
