Third phase of major repairs ready to start

Monday 24 June 2013

Third £250,000 repair project starting at Memorial Community Church, Plaistow

The next phase of high-level building repair works at Memorial Community Church, Plaistow is due to start on Monday 22 July.

The works, which should be finished in December, will finally stop rain and damp coming in this huge grade II listed building, which is home to a number of community projects as well as three church congregations.

Most of the funding for the £250,000 project has come from the Repair Grants for Listed Places of Worship scheme funded by English Heritage and Heritage Lottery Fund. Significant grants were also awarded by National Churches Trust and the Friends of Essex Churches Trust. The rest was raised from small grants and individuals, and through many local fundraising events held over the last two years.

The building work will include replacing eroded bricks, repairing leaded windows and fixing gutters at roof level all around the building.

This is the third phase of major high-level repairs to the building, after the restoration of its two towers in 2009 and 2011, and should be the last – although there is much more still to do once the building is watertight.

All the usual activities will carry on as usual while the work is going on, including the new Active Tuesdays Club in the Welcome Centre at the back of the building between 10 am and 3pm on Tuesdays. Older people in particular can come along and enjoy arts and crafts, board games, gentle exercise and gardening in the NOSH garden – as well as good food.
